This months Landscape Photo of the Month is "THE DUKE OF PORTLAND BOATHOUSE" on Ullswater in the Lake District.

Moved Out of The Studio

I have now moved out of the studio in Market Street, Ely and shall be working from home in Sutton for the foreseeable future.
I shall still be doing all the great photography stuff I did before, just not from the studio.

People & Places - Talk at Ramsey Camera Club

This coming Thursday evening, 11th February I shall giving a talk to Ramsey Camera Club entitled People & Places. I shall be showing and talking about of my landscape and portrait photographs. Everyone is welcome, not just photo club members. Pay on the door - £3 each (what a bargain!), at Ramsey Community Centre starting at 8.15pm.

A VERY SAD DAY ...

This morning I woke up the very sad news that David Bowie has passed away. I had to have a moment to myself as it bought a tear to my eye. I've been a big fan ever since the Ziggy days and I don't think there has been a week over many years that I haven't played a Bowie track.

My favourite Bowie tune? How on earth do you choose? It could be Time or Five Years or Starman or Heros or the cover of Velvet Undergrounds White Light / White Heat. In fact it could almost be anything he did back in the 70's!

A tragic loss - his music will live on forever.

So I've just been browsing the net, as you do. I was looking for a bit of history relating to past local photographers and came across this quote which I thought was very apt:
"The photographer who is also an artist has a great advantage over the photographer who is merely a mechanic."
How true, anyone can point a camera (or phone) at something and press the shutter button and take a snap shot, but a true photographer will craft the image.

If you are thinking of getting some family or kids portraits done for Christmas best you get your skates on! The cut-off date in order to get your products before Christmas is this Friday 4th December. You can still have your portrait session after this but I can't guarantee (and it's very unlikely) you will get your products before Christmas.
So this means you need to book your portrait photo session this week and do your viewing and choose your products by Friday!

Studio nearly finished!

Well, last evening i finished in the studio at 10pm, the evening before it was midnight. It’s now looking good - I've even got some photographs up on the walls.

My New Photography Studio Opening Very Soon

I have often thought of and looked at the possibility of opening a photography studio and always dismissed it, mainly due overheads being way too high. A couple of months ago an attractive opportunity arose the result of which is my new photography studio will be opening soon in December. Here are a few photographs before it’s decorated.

The SWPP Convention

I spent the day yesterday at the SWPP convention in London. For those of you who don't know what that is, it is 'thee' place to be for any serious photographer. It's proper title is The Societies Convention 2014, as they changed their name from the SWPP a couple of years back, but I think most of us, especially us seasoned professionals who have been members for a number of years still refer to it (and them) as THE SWPP which stands for The Society for Wedding and Portrait Photographers.
Normally, as in past years I would have spent two or three days there, but unfortunately, or fortunately for my business, depending on which way I look at it, due to other commitments I was only able to do the one day this year.
Why is it 'thee' place to be? Well there are lots of reasons some of which I am going to explain now. These are not in any particular order and there are probably lots more I haven't mentioned. All the best wedding, portrait and other photographers will be there. Not just from the UK but from all over the world. They are all a good bunch, willing to impart their knowledge, wisdom and experiences with other attendees, sometimes in a more formal approach such as the wide variety of seminars on offer, and sometimes in the bar over a drink (or two). All the top players in the photographic industry have a presence at the trade show. A place where many of them launch new products and you can see products that you didn't even know existed and touch base with existing suppliers. Everything from cameras and equipment (Ooh - I want one of those Fuji X Pro1's) , wedding albums and framed products, studio lighting and associated products, training, insurance, you name it and it's likely to be there. You can view stunning photography from all the world's top photographers.
Most of all though, just being with all those like minded talented people, energises me for the year to come and inspires me to take my photography to the next level.
